1. Do your research.
There’s something to explore in every country but it’s important to note that some countries may not be the best choice for your solo trip. For example, some may be experiencing political turbulence. It’s essential to do some research prior to visiting a new country.
2. Do not have a fixed plan
You need some wiggle room. Sometimes you’ll visit a place and you might want to stay longer. More often than not, you’ll meet some travel friends along the way and decide to change your travel route. There may also be times where you want to leave a destination much earlier than expected. Perhaps you don’t like it as much as you’d expected or maybe you feel unsafe/uncomfortable. Not having a fixed plan will let you travel freely and comfortably.
3. Accept that things will not go as expected
Lost passport? Delayed visa? Missed bus? Don’t worry, it happens. It’s OK. Trying to force thigs to happen in a particular way, may put you in some unfavourable situations. Some of the best experiences you will have will be because things did not go as initially planned. Embrace that and be ready to go with the flow.
4. It’s OK to lie
As a solo traveller, you may be a target for many horrible things – from scams to kidnappings (not to scare you, but it’s true!). It’s important to know when to lie. For example, a common lie I tell as a solo female traveller is ‘I’m on my way to meet a friend’ or even ‘I’ve got family in X country’. Whilst most people you come across don’t have bad intentions, you may encounter a few who do. Being aware of this will help you stay safe in your travels.
5. It’s OK to say ‘No’
Different countries in the world have different customs. For example, in many places bargaining is normal. It’s part of the culture. This may be new to you and at times, you might feel pressured into buying or saying ‘yes’ to something you’re not comfortable with. Learning to say ‘no’ and being comfortable doing so is essential to ensure that both you and your pockets stay safe.
6. Trust your instincts.
Be prepared to fly out of your comfort zone! That’s right- not ‘step’ out of your comfort zone but ‘fly’. Solo travelling gives you the opportunity to try things you may have never done at home. Say yes to yourself and you’ll begin making the most unforgettable memories in the most unexpected places, with the coolest people you’ve ever met!
As you travel, you’ll find that most people are kind and very welcoming. They’re eager to share their culture, food, and language with you. But it’s important to trust your instincts. You know that gut feeling you get when something doesn’t feel quite right? Trust that. Never ignore it. If you get this feeling around particular places or people, trust that feeling. It’s always better safe than sorry.
7. Learn a few phrases in the local language.
Learning some basic phrases in the language of the country you’re travelling to is not only polite and respectful, but it’ll help you communicate with locals in times of need.
Travelling to a new country is one of the most magical experiences. You feel sad leaving family and friends but simultaneously, there’s this electrical excitement because you’re eager for what’s yet to come. Give yourself the chance to explore the world but remember to stay safe so you can create even more beautiful memories.
