Travelling to Vietnam?
Vietnam is truly a fascinating country and was by far, my favourite country in SE Asia. It’s got something for everyone- from hiking the mountains in Sapa, to the thrilling Ha Giang loop all the way to the beaches in Hoi An. Vietnam is not one to miss out. I still remember the chaotic border crossing from Vientiane, Laos into Hanoi- the bus journey was 25 hours long!! 25 hours!!. I have never has such a turbulent ride. But I loved it so much. Both the journey and the people I met.
Vietnam is such a special place. With its history, languages, nature and people you’re bound to make some unforgettable memories.
Most of the locals (especially in more touristy regions like Hanoi) speak English and with Vietnamese being a language with many tones, it’s difficult phonetically write some translations using the Roman alphabet. As an English speaker, it’s likely that your pronunciation will evoke some laughter but your efforts will be appreciated.
Here are some basic phrases you can learn to help you interact with the locals!
